Two new children apps from us!

Finally I can speak and show you what we have been working very hard with the last few months! We have released not one but two children's apps together with Appanero/Blinq Apps. Wow long time since I posted something here. Been busy raising two kids, changing jobs and learning new skills. The great thing about working for Appanero is that these guys really are not afraid of trying new things, going at it from a different angle. They asked me to teach myself a plugin for Photoshop called Kwik, it basically allows you to build entire apps within Photoshop! It has been a long and sometimes hard mountain to climb but now finally here is the end result. I built about 90% of this app with Kwik, then the very capable programmers @ Appanero did some tweaking and added some cool stuff. My very talented wife Emma did all of the game design, the illustrations, characters. I did all of the music, sound effects and animations.

2013 best year ever!

Let me tell you something, 2013 is going to be the best year ever. I know that. The reasons I know that are several. Some I can speak of, others I have to keep to myself for now. A lot of very cool projects in the making and on the horizon. I got a new job working halftime over @ Appanero. Also working with my wonderful and multi talented wife on cool Espace777 projects. And a new Djablo album this year. I feel good!

Everybody needs a good website, of course when it comes to my own sites I get very picky. Me and my wife Emma needed a place for our projects to call home. I use Rapidweaver to build websites and found a very nice responsive theme called Carbon. Of course it needed some editing so I picked it apart using RWThemeMiner and Coda.

Rest assure I am no coder, I just do trial and error when I need to redo a theme that already comes with lots of goodies. Web design is not the main focus of my design life so Rapidweaver suits me just fine, it's a very powerful editor with amazing plugins that makes the life o a non-coder very very pleasant.

Oh dear Cinema4D

How I miss you dear Cinema4D it has been to long my old friend. Anyway, I started using this monster of a 3D software again so now me is very happy.

The mograph module is perhaps one of the best features in any three dee program or app out there in the known universe. For a long time I really wanted to learn how the hell one uses sound to generate animation. Now I know! Here's some early tests:

Using a very interesting technique (featured in the latest issue of Computer Arts) for decoding and breaking the jpeg code you can get extreme and fun results. Love the experimental part of this, something that is very important to me is finding new ways to generate visuals. Check out some examples here below:

Redesign for Biolamina

Together with my wife Emma we consult as super creatives from outer (e)space. We did a total redesign of all Biolamina's printing material, a lot of work in very little time but I think the end result speaks for it self and we are very proud of it. We created together with Biolamina a circular based system that illustrates their core business.

Do you know what I love most about stop motion? It gets the job done. Fast. If you want maximum impact on a minimal budget go for stop motion. It's not easy to fail, trust me, the most banal and stupid animations looks cool. Of course it helps if you have great apps like the simple but yet amazing Stop Motion Recorder to aid you in your Lynchian nightmares.

I'm totally hooked on Cinemagram, a very clever way to give life to your pictures (iPhone only). You basically shoot a very short 2-3 second movie and mask out the area in the picture/movie that you want to be untouched or "animated". The rest freezes giving you a very dreamlike mini movie.

A bit tired of Instagram and want more action? Then this might be your cup of coffee. Or tea. Whatever. I love it! Here are a couple of my own that I really enjoy watching. My alias is jean.magoo if you want to hook up.

Life, work and a concept for a iOS music player

You know what? I have a job nowadays. Yes. A regular job, you know a place were you go to every day, an office, fellow workers to talk to during coffee breaks, all that kind of good stuff. I just got fed up with all the freelance nut circus, good bye I will not miss you. Well kind of. Me and my wife still do freelance work as Espace777, that one is to good to be put away for good.

Anyway, my first two weeks have been great, all I have done is learn a lot about how to make pixel perfect graphics for mobile devices and the web. So here some screens for a make believe music player that I dubbed "Collections".

Hello good folks. In addition to redesigning Appaneros logotype I also was entrusted with redesigning their entire website. I must say, I'm very happy with the end result. It resembles the ideas I had with the logo nicely. Easy one of my best web designs ever.

If you like to hunt small little furry things and have an iPhone I think this app is for you. And I think you have to live in Sweden, at least this version is in swedish. So all you high tech loving swedish hunters out there, buy this. I designed it. It's good. It's beautiful. And (wouldn't you know it) it's also very useful!.

iPhone App for Fjällräven

UI Design á la Fjällräven

Finally I say. Finally. After being delayed I don't know how many times by Fjällräven themselves (don't ask me why I will not tell you), the official Fjällräven iPhone app is out. It's basically exactly the same app as the one I did for Naturkompaniet but with a different costume. And you know what? It's free. Hooooray. The extra cool thing about this app is that it's going to be released in several other countries compared to the Sweden exclusive Naturkompaniet App.

Damn it where did I put my car? Oh look there it is.

Motion news graphics reel 2011

From time to time I do freelance work for Sveriges Television (SVT). Great place, great people. It's really cool to work with news graphics, you really feel that the work you do matters. Often you only have a couple of hours to do the graphics, animation and rendering so you have to be smart about the decisions, specially take it easy with a lot of filters in After Effects that can take forever to render. I always try to do most of the styling in Photoshop in matters of looks, that helps a lot.

Grading for 4 Stjärnors Middag, Kanal 5

I have been given the great opportunity to work with a TV show called "4 Stjärnors Middag" for Kanal 5. I do all of the grading and mastering of the show. It's pretty hectic, four 23 minute programs per week maybe doesn't sound much but in the world of online grading it's a lot. It means going thru a lot of footage, fixing the levels, colors and putting on the finishing touches.

The show is about four swedish celebrities (new ones every week) coming together and trying to impress each other with cooking the most delicious meal they can think of. They have a professional chef that helps them but really it's not about fine food it's more of a conversation show.

From a graders perspective it's pretty challenging with a lot of different indoor scenes with pretty bad lightning and mixed lightning. And then there is the fact that you have to finish four episodes per week so there is little time to do fine detailed work. You have to find a middle way between what you want to do and what you really can do.

Another very challenging issue is that because of a tight schedule I have to do all of the grading and mastering within Avid Media Composer. So it was just a matter of learning it the hard way, I did a couple of great tutorials but really the only way to learn is to dive in with a good sense of bravery and just do it. It also helps if you are surrounded by very professional Avid users that can help you with all of those strange things that Avid does so different from say Final Cut Pro.

Coloring and title design for Thelma/Louise

I spend a couple of months between the fall and winter of 2010 @ Thelma/Louise doing things like graphical packages for TV, coloring and motion design. One of the projects was a movie for Borås Komun done to promote the city. The project was finished recently over a year later, they wanted to put in some additional summer footage. I used Apple Color for the coloring and After Effects for the very simple titles. Funny thing was that from the beginning of the project they were looking for a more cutting edge style so my first attempts were very different from what you see here. I will later on occasion publish these tests so you can compare.

My redesign

Appanero is an app making company based in Uppsala, Sweden. They are the ones responsible for Naturkompaniets Friluftsapp wich I did all of the graphics and art direction for.

They asked me to redesign their website and logotype. Below here you can see the old version of the logo:

Here's my new version in some variations. I wanted to highlight the word App and the easiest way was just to use two different colors.

Newsgraphics for SVT - Hooligans!

Sayonara. I'm going to start posting some of the screens and animations that I do for SVTs news shows, Aktuellt and Rapport. These graphics were for a news story about the increasing problem with hooliganism within elite swedish soccer. I like to work with rusty colors, it's one of my favorite color palettes and it goes well with news graphics. All images are courtesy of SVT.

iPad Magazine production

The moment I realized how incredibly cool magazines can be on the iPad I said to myself: I have to learn how to do that. Everything I have ever learned has always been out of a pure drive of curiosity and the possibility to make something great. First I had to get an iPad of course. Done that now. Felt good.

My background in editorial design and all my experience with motion and animation makes a pretty explosive combo for digital publishing I think.

The tools are out there, you only need Indesign CS4 or CS5 and a plugin, I'm using Mag+ from Bonnier (giant swedish publishing house). It's free all the way up until you decide to publish and send it up to the App Store. Really smart move from Bonnier I salute them.

So right now I'm learning the tool, experimenting and dreaming of publishing a hybrid between music, animation and great design. Just need to get the money for it.

Super fun jobs

It's 25 degrees Celsius outside so why do I sit here in front of my computer? I'm deeply disturbed that's why. No that's not the case. I'm just happy to be living in the first world and being able to connect my iPhone to my Macbook and write just these words exactly here.

From time to time, when I get desperate enough (life as a freelancer is not easy my friend) I go out on the big interweb and search for more stable jobs. I thought maybe it would be interesting to have them all in one post just for fun. Or just good old self promotion babble.

1. Super fun job as iPhone and iPad childrens app graphical ninja.

I got so excited about this job that I even did a little self promoting video. Sadly I didn't get the job. Little did I know at the time, that I no more than a year later, would be making me own childrens games for the iPad. Lesson learned: One gets what One wants. Just Focus. Yes.

2. Super fun job as UI designer at RIM Sweden.

Also a very very interesting job, working at RIM Sweden dreaming up new crazy app designs for Blackberry smart phones and tablets. Actually, I got an job offer but we couldn't agree upon the terms, first and foremost the job was in another city far from my son and wife. Not happening.

3. Digital designer at Fantasy Interactive
I really didn't have the time to do a proper work sample, I was in the middle of both the Naturkompaniet app and the production of the latest Biolamina movie. I thought what the heck I'll see what I can put together in just a couple of hours. Didn't work out with the job but I'm really happy with the color and theme not bad for a couple of hours work.

Naturkompaniets Friluftsliv app finally out!

Finally it's out and it seems to be quite popular, nr 1 in the Swedish app store under the category Navigation. Sweet. It's my first attempt at app design and the first time I really done proper GUI design. It was a lot of fun and also difficult but very rewarding to see that folks enjoy it.
